The United Bangsamoro Farmers Without Borders has called on newly elected Bangsamoro lawmakers to unite despite political differences and prioritize peace and the welfare of ordinary citizens, particularly farmers and fisherfolk.
The group stressed that agriculture remains a key pillar of the regional economy and urged the new members of the Bangsamoro Parliament to address the sector’s concerns.
It also expressed support for former Bangsamoro Chief Minister and Moro Islamic Liberation Front Chairman Alhadj Murad Ebrahim to become chief minister under the regular parliament.
According to the group, Ebrahim’s leadership could help ensure the proper continuation of peace talks between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, or MILF.
The organization pointed to the MILF’s role in the establishment of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, or BARMM, as a reason for its position.
United Bangsamoro Farmers Without Borders President Datu Michael Abas Kida, who is also a Maguindanao del Norte board member, expressed hope that the appeal would reach President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Kida said the request should reach Marcos before the scheduled meeting between the president and the MILF Central Committee.
The group’s appeal centers on political unity, the continuation of the peace process and greater attention to the needs of farmers and fisherfolk in the Bangsamoro region.
The statement comes as newly elected lawmakers prepare to serve in the region’s regular parliament. The group said addressing agricultural concerns and sustaining peace efforts are important to the welfare of ordinary residents.
The source did not specify the date of the planned meeting between Marcos and the MILF Central Committee or provide details on the selection process for the chief minister.
