Filipina tennis star Alex Eala extended her winning streak at the National Bank Open by defeating American Caty McNally, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, in a three-set match in Toronto.
Eala struggled early in the opening set after falling behind 3-1. She responded strongly, however, winning five consecutive games to take the set, 6-3.
McNally fought back in the second set, keeping the match close before winning it, 7-5, to force a deciding third set.
Eala requested a medical timeout during the match and received on-court medical attention because of an apparent issue with her right foot.
Despite the physical concern, Eala continued competing and secured the deciding set, 6-4, to complete the victory and advance to the next round of the tournament.
The win came after Eala captured her first WTA singles title at the DC Open in Washington, D.C.
She also defeated Alycia Parks in an earlier round of the Canadian Open, continuing her run of victories following her breakthrough WTA title.
Eala’s victory over McNally came in a closely contested match that lasted three sets, with the Filipino player overcoming an early deficit in the opening set and recovering from a second-set loss.
The 6-4 result in the deciding set secured Eala’s place in the next round of the National Bank Open.
The Canadian Open campaign continues Eala’s recent run of success on the WTA Tour after her title-winning performance at the DC Open.
