Government troops from the 403rd Infantry (Peacemaker) Brigade of the Philippine Army’s 4th Infantry (Diamond) Division stopped an attempt by New People’s Army remnants from Region 10 to establish a foothold in Caraga following a series of encounters in Barangay Bakingking, Esperanza, Agusan del Sur, on Sept. 12.
The operation began at about 5:30 a.m. when troops from the 1st Special Forces Battalion engaged the NPA Headquarters Force Neo of the North Central Mindanao Regional Committee.
At around 12:20 p.m., the 8th Infantry Battalion engaged the same group. Pursuit operations were later conducted with Special Forces teams.
The operation resulted in the neutralization of four NPA members, including Julia Cagadas, alias Rheda, identified as secretary of the NCMRC. The others were identified as Jonny Almonte Lindayo, alias Kikoy/Bugkoy; Rochamae Bihag, alias Maki; and Gerald Basahon, alias Doydoy.
Three NPA members also surrendered: Cherelyn Cuarisma Magsayo, alias Lian; Marilyn D. Taquin, alias Mayumi/Mayang; and Angelito Tahal Torres, alias Erin.
Troops recovered six high-powered firearms during the operation.
Brig. Gen. Seigfred C. Tubalado said the operation demonstrated the brigade’s readiness and capability to prevent armed groups from returning to previously cleared areas.
Maj. Gen. Marion T. Angcao reaffirmed the division’s commitment to protecting communities and preserving peace and security gains in Caraga. He also emphasized assisting families affected by the conflict and preventing further recruitment and exploitation.
The division said it will continue security and peace efforts while supporting peace and development in the region.
