Sixty parents in Indonesia have filed a police complaint after their children reportedly fell ill after consuming free meals distributed under the government’s flagship program.
The complaint seeks an investigation into alleged negligence in the implementation of the program, the identification of those who may be held responsible, and financial compensation for those affected.
Named in the complaint are the National Nutrition Agency, the kitchen that prepared the meals, and the schools that distributed them.
At least 300 students from several high schools in Karo, North Sumatra, reportedly became ill after eating the free meals in mid-August, with some requiring hospitalization.
The parents’ lawyer said they are also preparing a separate lawsuit against the government, which they plan to file before a district court.
Meanwhile, police are awaiting the results of forensic tests on food samples as part of the ongoing investigation.
