A 25-year-old garbage truck driver died while his passenger was injured after their vehicle plunged into a ravine in Barangay Panoypoy, Consolacion, Cebu, on the afternoon of Aug. 3.
The victim was identified only as Ivan, a resident of Barangay Mulao, Compostela, Cebu.
His companion, identified only as Gerald, 21, sustained injuries to various parts of his body.
According to the initial investigation by the Consolacion Municipal Police Station, the two were traveling to Barangay Binaliw in Cebu City when the crash occurred at about 3 p.m.
Police said the garbage truck allegedly suffered brake failure upon reaching Barangay Panoypoy, causing the vehicle to plunge into a ravine.
Emergency responders rushed both occupants to a hospital for treatment.
Ivan was later declared dead due to traumatic cerebral hemorrhage, authorities said.
Gerald survived the crash and remains under medical care for injuries sustained in the incident.
Police have not released additional details regarding the condition of the passenger.
Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the reported mechanical failure that allegedly caused the truck to lose control.
Authorities have yet to determine whether other factors contributed to the incident.
The investigation remains ongoing as police gather additional evidence related to the fatal crash.
