Sen. Robin Padilla has renewed his call to restore the death penalty following the fatal stabbing of an MC taxi rider in Caloocan City.
Padilla strongly condemned the attack, in which a male passenger allegedly stabbed the rider before taking the victim’s motorcycle.
The senator said the incident reflected what he described as the severity of violent crimes.
Padilla also cited his own experience of having spent several years in prison, saying it gave him insight into the nature of crimes of this kind.
He argued that when a life is taken, the punishment should also involve the offender’s life.
Based on that position, Padilla reiterated his support for reinstating capital punishment in the Philippines.
According to reports, the suspect repeatedly stabbed the MC taxi rider before fleeing with the victim’s motorcycle.
Authorities have not released additional information in the statement regarding the suspect’s identity or the status of the investigation.
Padilla’s remarks came in response to the reported killing and robbery, which he said underscored the need to reconsider the country’s policy on the death penalty.
The senator has previously expressed support for restoring capital punishment, and his latest statement follows another violent crime involving a public transport rider.
The fatal attack on the MC taxi rider has drawn attention because of the violence involved and the reported theft of the victim’s motorcycle after the stabbing.
Padilla maintained that crimes of this nature warrant the return of the death penalty, reiterating his position in light of the recent incident in Caloocan City.
