House prosecutors seek prayers ahead of Sara Duterte impeachment trial

The House prosecution panel said it is fully prepared for the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, which is set to begin on July 6 before the Senate impeachment court.

Lead prosecutor Rep. Gerville Luistro said the prosecution team has been preparing for the proceedings since the 19th Congress. She made the statement during the Mass for Truth, Justice and Accountability held in Quezon City.

Luistro said both the prosecution and defense panels are expected to deliver their opening statements when the trial opens on Monday. The Senate impeachment court is also expected to resolve pending motions during the initial proceedings.

During the event, Luistro appealed to the public to pray for the prosecution panel and support its efforts throughout the impeachment trial. She also urged Filipinos to pray for the conviction of Duterte, saying the country deserves better leaders.

She encouraged the public to stand with the prosecution until the conclusion of the impeachment proceedings.

Luistro acknowledged that the prosecution panel has limitations, shortcomings, and imperfections but said prayers and public support remain important throughout the trial.

Despite her appeal for support, Luistro also asked the public to pray for the defense team, the senator-judges who will hear the case, and the nation.

Meanwhile, private prosecutor Atty. Lorna Kapunan confirmed that the defense had already submitted its comment on the pre-trial order. She said they were satisfied with its contents.

The prosecution has listed 57 witnesses for the trial, while the defense is expected to present more than 20 witnesses.

The prosecution’s first presentation will focus on Article IV of the impeachment complaint, which involves the alleged assassination plot or grave threats.
