The Department of Education (DepEd) has reminded the public that a long-standing policy already prohibits students from using gadgets during instructional hours in schools.
The clarification came as discussions on the use of gadgets in schools resurfaced following the filing of a similar bill by Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian.
DepEd said the existing policy has long been in place and is contained in DepEd Order No. 006, s. 2026, or the Guidelines on Ensuring Safe and Motivating Learning Environment.
Under the policy, students are prohibited from using gadgets during class hours unless the devices are needed for educational purposes or during emergency situations.
The department said the policy aims to help maintain a safe and conducive learning environment while allowing technology to be used when appropriate.
DepEd also urged schools to strengthen their information and advocacy campaigns promoting the safe and responsible use of the internet and electronic gadgets among students.
The department encouraged school administrators and educators to continue reminding learners and parents about the existing rules governing gadget use inside school premises.
According to DepEd, schools should also reinforce responsible digital behavior as part of their efforts to support students’ learning and well-being.
The agency reiterated its reminder following a series of incidents involving violence in schools that renewed public discussion on student access to gadgets during class hours.
DepEd emphasized that the policy remains in effect and that exceptions are limited to educational activities and emergencies as provided under the department’s guidelines.
The department said it will continue encouraging schools to implement the policy while promoting responsible technology use in support of a safe and motivating learning environment.
