Cagayan de Oro City Councilor Roger Abaday emphasized proper guidance for minors to protect their health from harmful and dangerous substances.
He explained that using illegal substances like rugby and solvents poses serious risks since these products remain easily accessible in hardware stores.
The councilor stressed that authorities must monitor establishments closely to prevent minors from purchasing harmful chemical substances without proper supervision.
Abaday also proposed implementing a sales logbook system to record all purchases of volatile substances within different barangays across the city.
Through this system, authorities can track buyers, identify minors attempting purchases, and determine locations where such transactions frequently occur.
Health experts previously warned that inhaling solvents can severely damage the brain and significantly impair overall mental and cognitive functions.
This exposure may lead to loss of concentration, memory impairment, and permanent brain damage if minors continue engaging in solvent abuse regularly.
Authorities also warned that solvent abuse negatively affects the lungs, liver, and heart, which are essential for maintaining proper body functions.
These health complications may result in severe conditions and could potentially lead to death if authorities fail to prevent misuse effectively.
The councilor urged parents and communities to work together actively to protect young individuals from the dangers associated with solvent abuse.
