Comelec open to BSKE postponement, sets condition

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) said it will not oppose the possible postponement of the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE).

This comes as the House of Representatives is considering another reset of the BSKE, currently scheduled for November 2 this year.

According to Rep. Albee Benitez, the move is being considered amid rising costs of goods and fuel linked to tensions in the Middle East.

Comelec clarified, however, that it will only agree under one condition—that the rescheduled elections should not be moved beyond May 2027.

Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia explained that pushing the elections past May would overlap with preparations for the 2028 presidential elections, which begin in June 2027.

For now, the agency continues its preparations for the BSKE in November.

It can be recalled that Congress allocated ₱19 billion for the elections, with around ₱3 billion already spent by the poll body for the printing of approximately 90 million ballots and other procurement.

Comelec added that the remaining ₱16 billion could be declared as savings if the elections are postponed, and would be reverted to the National Treasury.
