Authorities confiscated 240 kilos of spoiled chilled chicken from a stall at the meat section of Baguio Public Market after receiving complaints from consumers who allegedly purchased spoiled poultry.
The inspection was conducted on July 28 by personnel of the Baguio City Veterinary and Agriculture Office (CVAO), together with the Public Order and Safety Division (POSD) and the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO).
The operation was launched following reports from consumers who claimed they had bought spoiled chicken from the market.
During the inspection, members of the Meat and Fishery Products Monitoring Task Force seized 240 kilos of spoiled chilled chicken to prevent the possible spread of food-borne illnesses and stop the sale of unsafe food products.
Authorities also issued the stall owner a Notice of Violation for alleged violations of the Food Safety Act of 2013, the Consumer Act of the Philippines, the Meat Inspection Code of the Philippines, City Ordinance No. 88-2023, and City Tax Ordinance 2012-01.
Following the operation, the CVAO reminded consumers to exercise caution when purchasing meat products.
The office advised buyers to ensure that fresh or chilled meat carries a valid Meat Inspection Certificate (MIC), while imported meat should have a Certificate of Meat Inspection (COMI).
The CVAO also urged the public to avoid purchasing “hot meat” or undocumented meat products and to check that meat is fresh, properly chilled, and free from foul odors, slime or discoloration.
The agency likewise reminded meat vendors to strictly observe proper handling, storage and sale of meat products to protect consumers.
