Retired AFP official, a critic of the Marcos administration arrested at NAIA

A retired Air Force major general known for his criticism of the Marcos administration was arrested by authorities upon his arrival at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 on Monday, January 5, 2026.

Romeo Poquiz, founder of the United People’s Initiative, was taken into custody after arriving from Bangkok, Thailand. Authorities said Poquiz is facing a charge of inciting to sedition, filed by the Philippine National Police–Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) before the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 77.

Poquiz has been an outspoken critic of the current administration, frequently voicing concerns over what he described as widespread corruption in government.

The arrest drew sharp criticism from the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino (PDP). Deputy spokesperson Atty. Ferdinand Topacio condemned the move, calling it an attempt by the administration to silence dissenting voices.

According to the PDP, Poquiz merely echoed the frustration and anxiety felt by many Filipinos. The party claimed that instead of addressing these concerns, the government chose to make Poquiz an example to intimidate critics and discourage public opposition.

The case continues to draw public attention as questions on free speech and political dissent resurface following Poquiz’s arrest.
