Veteran journalist and former Kalibo mayor Johnny Dayang, 89, was shot dead by still unidentified suspects while resting inside his home in Villa Salvacion, Andagao, Kalibo, Aklan on the evening of April 29.
According to PCPT Aubrey Ayon, spokesperson for the Aklan Provincial Police Office, Dayang sustained gunshot wounds to the neck and back. He was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Investigators recovered three spent bullet casings at the crime scene, although the type of firearm used remains unknown.
As of now, police have not identified any suspects or determined the motive behind the killing. Authorities continue to investigate the incident and are appealing for any witnesses or leads.
Dayang was a veteran journalist and served as the Chairman Emeritus of the Publishers Association of the Philippines, Inc. (PAPI). He also once served as Officer-in-Charge (OIC) Mayor of Kalibo.
The killing has alarmed media organizations and residents alike, with calls mounting for a swift and thorough investigation.
