25 witnesses readied for VP Sara Duterte impeachment trial

Twenty-five witnesses are being prepared by House prosecutors for the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, according to Manila Third District Rep. Joel Chua.

Speaking during a forum in Quezon City on Friday, Chua confirmed that their witness lineup has reached 25 individuals. However, he noted that the list remains subject to final review before the proceedings move forward.

Chua said the largest group of witnesses may be connected to allegations involving confidential funds and unexplained wealth, which are among the issues expected to be tackled during the impeachment proceedings.

The House prosecutor also disclosed that the prosecution panel is considering the inclusion of additional high-profile witnesses. He declined to identify potential names, saying the list is still being finalized.

Meanwhile, Chua explained that the pre-trial conference scheduled for next week will not be open to the public or members of the media.

According to the lawmaker, the pre-trial process will include the stipulation of facts, marking of evidence, and the presentation of witnesses that both sides intend to use during the trial. He said these procedures are intended to prevent surprises once the formal trial begins.

The prosecution panel, together with the private prosecutors they have engaged, is expected to appear before the Senate during the pre-trial conference. Defense lawyers representing Vice President Duterte will also attend the proceedings.

The impeachment trial preparations continue as both sides finalize their evidence and witness lists ahead of the Senate proceedings. Prosecutors maintain that their lineup remains under review, while discussions on the possible inclusion of additional witnesses are ongoing.
