20 Chinese nationals arrested in Davao de Oro over illegal mining, immigration violations

Authorities arrested 20 Chinese nationals during an immigration operation that uncovered an alleged illegal mining network in the municipality of Mawab, Davao de Oro officials said.

The operation was led by the Bureau of Immigration XI in coordination with the 10th Infantry (Agila) Division of the Philippine Army. Mission orders were carried out against the foreign nationals for violations of the Philippine Immigration Act of 1940.

Authorities said the operation led to the discovery of suspected illegal mining activities in the area. During the raid, the arrested individuals were reportedly unable to present valid permits and sufficient documents when required by authorities.

Among the items discovered during the operation were mineral resources, explosives, and uniforms identified as belonging to the Chinese People’s Liberation Army. Authorities said the presence of these materials indicated a possible connection to illegal mining networks operating in the area.

Initial investigation showed that the arrested Chinese nationals were holders of tourist visas but had already overstayed in the country, making them subject to immigration violations.

Officials said further investigation is ongoing to determine the full extent of the alleged illegal activities and identify other individuals who may be involved in the operation.

Authorities also continue to examine the materials recovered from the site as part of efforts to establish links between the suspects and the reported illegal mining activities in Mawab.

The Bureau of Immigration and military units involved in the operation said they remain committed to enforcing immigration laws and addressing illegal activities involving foreign nationals in the region.
