14 students hospitalized after suspected chemical fumes in Antique

Fourteen students from Egaña National High School in Sibalom, Antique, were taken to the hospital Wednesday morning after reportedly inhaling a foul odor suspected to be chemical fumes.

Initial reports said that around 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 10, students and teachers noticed a strong smell within the school premises. Soon after, 13 female students and one male student complained of dizziness and discomfort.

They were rushed to Ramon Maza Sr. Memorial District Hospital, where they were given medical treatment. Authorities confirmed that some of the students have been discharged, while others remain under observation.

During a police inspection of the school grounds, authorities recovered Vindex Plus, a pesticide. Investigators are examining whether the substance caused the odor that led to the students’ condition.

In response to the incident, Head Teacher Designate Nelia Antolino announced the suspension of classes at Egaña National High School until further notice to ensure safety.
