The summer capital of the Philippines plunged to a freezing 11.8°C on Sunday, January 28, marking the coldest temperature recorded in the country so far this year, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
The frosty morning broke the previous day’s record of 13.4°C and crowned Baguio City as the coldest place in the Philippines in 2025.
Baguio tops a list of ten areas experiencing the lowest temperatures today. Following closely are Itbayat, Batanes; Calayan, Cagayan; Tanay, Rizal; Sinait, Ilocos Sur; Abucay, Bataan; Casiguran, Aurora; Malaybalay, Bukidnon; Iba, Zambales; and Tuguegarao City, Cagayan.
PAGASA attributes the chilling weather to the ongoing northeast monsoon or “amihan,” which has intensified in recent weeks. Residents and tourists in Baguio are advised to bundle up and take precautions against the cold, as temperatures could dip further in the coming days.
Despite the frigid conditions, the cold spell has been a welcome reprieve for many visitors flocking to Baguio to experience its trademark sweater weather. Tourism establishments have reported a surge in bookings as the city lives up to its reputation as the go-to destination for those seeking a cool escape.
