Nearly one in four vehicles sold in the Philippines from January to August 2026 were electric vehicles, according to the Department of Energy (DOE).
The DOE reported that 66,685 electric vehicles (EVs) were sold during the first eight months of the year, accounting for 24.7% of an estimated 270,124 total vehicle sales during the same period.
Of the EVs sold, 29,649 were plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), 20,716 were hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), and 16,320 were battery electric vehicles (BEVs).
The increase in EV sales has also been accompanied by growth in charging infrastructure. As of the end of August, the country had 1,876 registered EV charging stations, while 949 EV models had been recognized by the DOE.
The government is targeting a 50% EV share of the country’s total vehicle fleet by 2040 under the Comprehensive Roadmap for the Electric Vehicle Industry (CREVI).
Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said the expansion of EV use needs to be accompanied by improvements in charging infrastructure, safety policies and the capabilities of emergency responders.
These measures include increasing knowledge about proper EV charging and battery care, handling high-voltage electrical hazards and following appropriate emergency-response procedures.
The DOE figures reflect the growing share of electric vehicles in the Philippine automotive market during the first eight months of 2026, while the government continues efforts to expand EV adoption and related infrastructure.
