1 dead after Cebu hot pursuit turns into gunfight; Police officer hit

A man was killed after a hot pursuit operation conducted by authorities turned into a shootout in Sitio Himombungan, Barangay Cantuod, Balamban, Cebu on the afternoon of May 11, 2026.

According to the Balamban Police Station, the operation targeted an 18-year-old identified as Jehu, who was tagged as the alleged gunman in a shooting incident in the area on May 10.

Police said another male suspect identified as Rachel allegedly opened fire after noticing the presence of law enforcement operatives.

Police Corporal Jonel Dela Cruz was hit during the encounter but survived because of his bulletproof vest, authorities said.

Operatives returned fire, resulting in an exchange of gunshots.

Rachel was rushed to a hospital but was later declared dead.

Authorities also arrested Jehu and a 40-year-old man identified as Alvan during the operation. A 15-year-old boy identified by the alias “Ton” was also rescued from the area.

Police said firearms, suspected illegal drugs, and drug paraphernalia were recovered from the suspects.

Authorities have yet to release additional details regarding the shooting incident that triggered the hot pursuit operation.

An investigation is ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the encounter and the alleged involvement of the suspects in illegal activities.
