Authorities seized ₱9.8 million worth of smuggled cigarettes during a checkpoint operation by Task Force Sirawan in Davao City on January 16, 2025.
The contraband was found in a FUSO Fighter Close Van with plate number CCK3653, which was flagged down at around 3:40 p.m. for inspection following a tip from a concerned citizen. The truck driver, identified as Alias Toy, 37, a resident of Misamis Oriental, failed to present valid documents for the cargo.
Reports indicated that the van falsely carried J&T courier branding. Coordination with the courier company’s area manager confirmed the truck and driver were not connected to J&T. Upon inspection, authorities discovered 251 boxes of Modern Red smuggled cigarettes inside the vehicle.
The suspect is currently detained at the Toril Police Station while the confiscated items have been handed over to the Bureau of Customs for proper disposal.
The seizure highlights the effectiveness of Task Force Sirawan in intercepting illegal activities in Davao City. However, the incident also raises concerns about the use of fake courier vehicles to smuggle contraband, emphasizing the need for increased vigilance among law enforcement and the public.
This operation is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to crack down on smuggling and protect legitimate businesses from unfair competition posed by illegal goods. Further investigation is underway to determine the source of the smuggled cigarettes and potential accomplices in the operation.
