The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) plans to recommend a bold shift to a 7 a.m.-4 p.m. work schedule for national government agencies in Metro Manila to tackle the region’s notorious traffic congestion.
MMDA Chairman Atty. Don Artes explained that the new schedule aims to reduce the number of vehicles on the road during rush hours. According to Artes, nearly half a million government employees work in Metro Manila, with 37.15% using private vehicles during peak hours. The adjusted schedule could significantly improve traffic flow, he said.
Metro Manila Council Chairman and San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora expressed support for the proposal, suggesting that starting work earlier could lead to better traffic management.
Before submitting the recommendation to President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., the MMDA will consult with Metro Manila mayors to gather input and ensure consensus among local leaders.
The controversial proposal has sparked debates, with critics questioning its practicality for employees commuting long distances and its impact on work-life balance. However, supporters argue that drastic measures are necessary to address the capital’s traffic woes, which cost the economy billions annually.
If implemented, this traffic solution could pave the way for a more efficient Metro Manila, but it remains to be seen whether it will gain full approval and public acceptance.
The MMDA’s push for a 7-4 work shift signals their urgency in tackling one of the country’s most pressing urban challenges.
