The Visayas grid is expected to experience another period of insufficient power supply.
According to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), the Visayas grid will be placed under Yellow Alert status from 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. today.
A Yellow Alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirements.
The NGCP said the alert is primarily due to the unavailability of several major coal-fired power plants in the Visayas, coupled with an expected increase in electricity demand.
The grid operator also reported that 11 power plants have been on forced outage this month, while eight experienced forced outages last month and one in March.
In addition, several power plants have remained unavailable for operation since previous years, further affecting the grid’s available capacity.
