Tropical Storm Nika intensifies, threatening Northern Luzon with heavy rains and strong winds

On Saturday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported that Severe Tropical Storm “Nika” has slightly intensified as it approaches Northern Luzon. The storm, currently located about 425 kilometers east of Infanta, Quezon, is bringing with it sustained winds of 110 km/h, gusts of up to 135 km/h, and potential impacts of gale-force winds and coastal flooding in several regions.

PAGASA Issues Wind and Rainfall Warnings

PAGASA has raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2 for areas expected to experience gale-force winds within 24 hours, including parts of Aurora, Isabela, Cagayan, Nueva Vizcaya, and the Mountain Province. Under Signal No. 1, Metro Manila, parts of Quezon, Laguna, and the Polillo Islands are warned of strong winds, with impacts ranging from minor to moderate on life and property.

The agency warns that “Nika” may land in Northern Luzon, particularly over Isabela or Aurora, by Sunday morning or early afternoon. Once it lands, the storm is expected to cross the Luzon landmass and re-emerge over the West Philippine Sea by evening. Forecasts suggest that “Nika” may intensify into a typhoon before reaching land but could weaken slightly upon land interaction.

Coastal Inundation and Rough Seas

Coastal areas risk moderate to high storm surges, especially in low-lying communities in Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, and parts of Cagayan. PAGASA has also issued a Gale Warning for the eastern seaboards of Luzon, including the Polillo Islands, Catanduanes, and parts of Northern Samar. Mariners are advised to remain in port or seek safe harbor until conditions improve, as sea waves may reach up to 7 meters.
