Three police officers have been relieved from their posts after shooting a doctor allegedly involved in a hit-and-run incident in Iloilo City early Sunday, Oct. 11, as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
According to an initial police report, a car crashed into a store and a parked tricycle in Barangay Baldoza, La Paz, early Sunday. The driver allegedly fled the scene, prompting personnel from Iloilo City Police Station 2 to respond after receiving reports, including a 911 call.
Police located and intercepted the vehicle in Barangay Caingin.
However, when officers attempted to take the vehicle into their custody, the driver allegedly tried to run them over, prompting the police to open fire, according to the initial report.
The driver, identified by the alias “Pao,” is a 29-year-old ophthalmologist who sustained a gunshot wound and was immediately taken to a hospital.
Iloilo City Police Office Director Police Col. Wilbert Parilla said the doctor was in stable condition.
The three officers relieved from their posts include two corporals and one master sergeant. An investigation is underway to determine the full circumstances of the incident, including whether the officers followed established police operational procedures.
The National Police Commission Regional Office VI has also ordered a separate investigation to establish what happened and ensure accountability among those involved.
Based on preliminary information gathered, the driver could face charges of direct assault, attempted homicide and reckless imprudence resulting in damage to property.
Iloilo City Mayor Raisa Treñas confirmed that the doctor is her cousin.
Treñas, however, stressed that the investigation should be fair and impartial. She also said appropriate charges should be filed if the doctor is found responsible.
Authorities have yet to complete their investigations into the shooting and the reported collision. The findings are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine whether any parties should face further legal action.
