Suspect shot dead after stabbing police officer in Cebu City

A police officer was injured after being stabbed by an allegedly intoxicated man who was later shot and killed during a confrontation early April 8 in Cebu City.

The injured officer, identified as a Police Master Sergeant assigned to the Cebu Provincial Police Office, sustained a stab wound to the chest.

The suspect, identified only by the alias “Bert,” was reported to be a resident of Mabinay, Negros Oriental.

Based on initial investigation, the officer responded to a trouble alarm in Barangay Banilad at around 1 a.m. Authorities said the officer encountered the suspect, who was reportedly intoxicated and causing a disturbance.

In an effort to prevent the situation from escalating, the officer allegedly placed the suspect inside his vehicle.

Authorities said the officer offered to take the suspect to the South Bus Terminal and provide fare so he could return to his hometown.

However, while they were traveling, the suspect suddenly stabbed the officer.

During the commotion, the officer was forced to defend himself and shot the suspect in the stomach, authorities said.

The suspect died from the gunshot wound, while the injured officer was brought to a hospital for treatment of his chest injury.

Investigation into the incident remains ongoing as authorities continue to gather details surrounding the confrontation.

Meanwhile, Cebu Provincial Police Office Chief Police Col. Abubakar Mangelen Jr. visited the injured officer at the hospital on April 9 to check on his condition.

Police authorities have not released further details as the investigation continues.
