The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) assured its full support for three Filipino seafarers currently detained in Algeria.
This comes as the agency coordinates with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to strengthen the legal defense of the affected Filipinos.
The individuals are among eight crew members arrested on July 28, 2023, after Algerian authorities discovered around 35.8 kilograms of suspected cocaine aboard the commercial vessel CV Harris while docked at a port in Algiers.
Five of the crew members have since been released, while three remain in detention.
According to Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac, the agency continues to maintain close contact with the families of the seafarers and is providing assistance as the case progresses.
He added that the government is carefully studying legal options and will make appropriate recommendations to the President based on its assessment.
