A street sweeper was killed while his wife was injured after a hit-and-run incident involving a pickup truck in Mandaue City, Cebu, early Thursday.
Police identified the victims as Teo, 37, and his wife Rose, 39, who both worked as street sweepers in the city. The couple was clearing the road when the pickup suddenly struck them.
Video from the scene showed the couple sprawled and bloodied on the pavement, lying only a short distance apart. Authorities and concerned residents rushed to help, and both were immediately taken to the hospital. Teo, however, was declared dead on arrival, while Rose remained under medical care.
Hours later, the 21-year-old driver of the pickup truck surrendered to police after being turned over by his mother. Investigators confirmed he was behind the wheel during the crash. Police have yet to disclose whether charges will be filed, pending the ongoing investigation.
The families of both sides have expressed willingness to discuss a possible settlement, but the case remains under police review. Authorities have not released further details on the driver’s condition or the circumstances leading to the collision.
Police continue to gather evidence, including security footage and witness accounts, to determine the appropriate legal action.
