Steve Martin and Martin Short ban Chevy Chase from OMITB over ‘nasty’ past: ‘No room for jerks on set’

Chevy Chase may have been one of the original “Three Amigos,” but insiders say he won’t be joining his former co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short on Only Murders in the Building anytime soon.

The hit Hulu comedy, known for its A-list guest appearances and quirky murder-mystery twists, has welcomed everyone from Sting to Meryl Streep. However, fans hoping for a nostalgic reunion between the 1986 comedy trio may be disappointed. According to a production insider, Martin, 79, and Short, 75, have no interest in working with the notoriously difficult 81-year-old Chase.

Their set is a really relaxed, warm place, said the source. They don’t want someone with a reputation like Chevy’s ruining the dynamic.

Decades-old tension resurfaces

Chase, who once infamously admitted that he didn’t care about being seen as a jerk, has long been dogged by stories of on-set misbehavior. While Three Amigos was a box office hit nearly 40 years ago, insiders say the experience left Martin and Short with lasting memories — and not the fond kind.

They remember working with him all too well, said the source, noting that the pair are protective of the collaborative, light-hearted atmosphere that defines their current series.

Despite the chatter, a spokesperson for the OMITB team shut down any speculation of personal grudge by stating that the show is cast based on the written word and not personal preferences. Even so, the message from the production camp is clear: there’s no invitation for Chevy Chase in the Arconia’s guest list.

Keeping the chemistry clean

Only Murders in the Building thrives on chemistry and camaraderie among its leads. Martin and Short, known for decades of comedic teamwork and mutual admiration, bring a natural rapport to the screen — something producers are keen to preserve.

The show’s success also rests on its tone, blending comedy with heart. Bringing in someone with Chase’s polarizing history, one insider added, might risk upsetting that balance.

Over the years, Chase has alienated more than a few co-stars, including cast members of Community, where his behind-the-scenes behavior became headline news. In contrast, Martin and Short continue to be praised for their professionalism and easygoing spirit, both on- and off-camera.

Though fans of classic comedy may still hold out hope for a Three Amigos revival, it appears that this trio is officially down to two — at least where Only Murders is concerned.

And in the Arconia, there’s no mystery here: drama gets left at the door.
