Sexyy Red slammed for AI photos with MLK: ‘Disrespectful to his legacy,’ says Bernice King

Sexyy Red, the provocative rapper behind hits like “Whatchu Know About Me,” ignited a social media firestorm after sharing artificial intelligence-generated images of herself with civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The pictures, intended to honor Dr. King on his federal holiday, were widely criticized as distasteful and disrespectful.

Controversial Images Stir Backlash

In one of the AI-created photos, Sexyy Red wears a low-cut red dress with a chain reading “Big Sexyy,” holding a wad of cash. Beside her, Dr. King is depicted walking with protestors holding signs such as “We March for Jobs for All Now.” Another image shows the rapper slow dancing with Dr. King, gazing into each other’s eyes, while she sports a red tank top instead of her dress.

Sexyy Red shared the images on her X (formerly Twitter) account with the caption, “Happy MLK Day!!” The post immediately drew sharp criticism. “Sorry ma’am, Dr. King never visited the brothel,” wrote one user, while another sarcastically commented, “Maybe this was MLK’s dream.”

Bernice King Speaks Out

The controversy escalated when Dr. King’s daughter, Dr. Bernice King, publicly condemned the posts. “This is intentionally distasteful, dishonoring, deplorable, and disrespectful to my family and my father,” she wrote on X. Dr. King’s daughter also urged the rapper to delete the images, reminding the public of her father’s assassination while advocating for civil rights and social justice.

“This disrespects his legacy,” Bernice added. “Please delete.”

Sexyy Red responded to the backlash by removing the posts and issuing an apology. “You ain’t wrong, never meant to disrespect your family. My apologies,” she wrote on X. The rapper claimed she reposted the images thinking they were harmless.

A Pattern of Controversy

This isn’t the first time Sexyy Red has made headlines for her social media activity. Known for her unfiltered posts and bold personality, the rapper has previously faced backlash for comments about relationships and endorsements of polarizing figures. Despite the negative reactions, she remains one of the most prominent female rappers in the industry, even endorsing Kamala Harris for president during the 2024 election.

However, the controversy around AI-generated imagery isn’t exclusive to Sexyy Red. In December 2024, Madonna faced similar criticism after sharing doctored photos of herself with Pope Francis. The images, including one where the Pope appears to have his arm around Madonna, sparked ridicule online. Critics accused her of using the pictures as a desperate attempt to remain relevant.

Reflection on AI and Social Media

Sexyy Red’s debacle highlights ongoing concerns over the use of artificial intelligence in creating controversial content. While the rapper may have intended the images as a lighthearted homage, critics argue such posts trivialize the legacy of historical figures. The incident serves as a reminder of the ethical dilemmas posed by AI-generated content and the potential harm of thoughtless social media posts.
