Rural feud over corn plants turns deadly; two men shot dead

A heated argument over corn crops escalated into a deadly shootout in Sitio Kanyogan, Barangay General Luna, San Remigio, Antique leaving two men dead and one injured on Wednesday morning, January 1.

The victims were identified as Jessmar, 25, and Gerald, 37, both residents of the area.

Police Staff Sergeant Sherwin Puyong of San Remigio Municipal Police Station revealed the dispute started when Gerald confronted Jessmar’s father, Jimson, after cattle reportedly destroyed Gerald’s corn crops.

The confrontation intensified when Jessmar allegedly attempted to shoot Gerald but failed. Gerald retaliated, firing back and hitting Jessmar in the chest. Jimson then pulled out his own firearm, shooting Gerald in the process.

In the chaos, Jefferson, a bystander who tried to mediate, was struck in the arm.

All three were rushed to a nearby hospital, but Jessmar and Gerald succumbed to their injuries. Jefferson is recovering.

Jimson has surrendered to authorities and remains in the custody of the San Remigio Police.
