Rice prices drop to ₱55/kilo, more cuts expected

The price of imported rice in the Philippines will drop to ₱55 per kilo starting Feb. 5, down from ₱58 per kilo, according to Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) is eyeing further reductions, targeting ₱49 per kilo by mid-February. The move aims to stabilize rice prices and ease inflationary pressure on essential goods.

“This is part of our ongoing efforts to ensure affordable rice for Filipinos,” Laurel said. The DA will continue monitoring the supply and market conditions to prevent price manipulation.

The price adjustment comes amid concerns over food security and rising costs of living. The government hopes the measure will provide relief to consumers, though some industry players worry about its impact on local farmers.
