Mayor, guards arrested at Davao City checkpoint over illegal firearm

Authorities arrested Nabalawag, Cotabato Mayor Anwar Saluwang and three others at a checkpoint in Sirawan, Toril, Davao City, around 10 p.m. on February 4, 2025, for alleged violations of Republic Act 10591 (Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act) and the Omnibus Election Code.

Task Force Davao personnel flagged down a silver Mitsubishi Triton, driven by Samsudin, 39, for a routine inspection.

Officers PCPL Relopez and CAA II John Mark Ogabang spotted the handle grip of a firearm in plain view near the driver’s side.

Further inspection revealed an unidentified firearm on the vehicle’s floor matting, between the feet of Mayor Anwar, 49, who was seated at the back.

Two passengers, Maroufh, 30, and Prangco, 33, were also found carrying firearm magazines with ammunition.

The checkpoint officers immediately placed all four under arrest and informed them of their constitutional rights.

Authorities are investigating the incident. Charges for illegal possession of firearms and election-related offenses are expected to be filed.
