A dead reef shark was found in Zamboanga City with a diaper stuck on its head, raising fresh concerns about worsening marine pollution.
The incident was captured on video Wednesday by Facebook user Harvey Yap, who recorded the shark floating. The clip showed the animal with its head completely covered by what appeared to be a used diaper.
The diaper may have prevented the shark from swimming properly, possibly leading to its death. Several commenters described the shark as another victim of ocean waste, pointing to the increasing amount of plastics and non-biodegradable trash found along coastal areas.
Studies from the United Nations Environment Programme have ranked the country among the top contributors to ocean plastic pollution, along with India, Malaysia, China and Indonesia.
Local residents who shared the video expressed frustration over recurring reports of sea animals entangled in trash.
