Prince Harry has extended what appears to be a personal peace offering to King Charles III, but insiders warn the move could either heal—or reignite—the royal feud that has simmered since 2020.
According to The Mail on Sunday, the Duke of Sussex plans to invite his father and other senior royals to the 2027 Invictus Games, which will take place in Birmingham. Sources claim that the outreach marks Harry’s first significant step toward reconciliation since stepping back from royal duties nearly five years ago.
He is reportedly reviewing the language of the invitations himself and signing off on the guest list, signaling an intentional and calculated move to include his estranged family in one of his biggest international achievements.
Trust still broken after ‘Spare’
While the gesture might appear to open the door for healing, royal insiders say skepticism runs deep—especially after the fallout from Harry’s memoir Spare and his interviews accusing the monarchy of emotional neglect and racial insensitivity.
One palace aide told The Mirror that King Charles remains hesitant, not because of the event itself, but due to concerns over confidentiality. He reportedly feels burned by Harry’s past disclosures and fears that any conversation could be repeated or distorted for public consumption.
Royal biographer Ingrid Seward echoed this concern. She said the King could be tempted to attend as a show of support for veterans, but warned that personal issues still linger. According to her, Charles may be reluctant to risk further private conversations being exposed, as he believes Harry has done before.
A calculated date with complications
The 2027 Invictus Games are scheduled for July 12 to 17, placing the closing ceremony on the same day as Queen Camilla’s 80th birthday. Sources say this clash could complicate matters further, especially if tensions between Camilla and Harry still linger over the way she was portrayed in his book.
Although no formal response from the palace has been made, insiders believe the family will receive early notice this month to give Charles time to consider. The King’s calendar is reportedly booked years in advance, so the advanced invitation is viewed by many as a strategic test of willingness.
Royal commentator Katie Nicholl told The Mirror that the King is still open to reconnecting. She described Charles as a man with an “incredible capacity for forgiveness” and said he wants a relationship with both Harry and his grandchildren.
Despite the emotional landmines, Harry appears to be softening his stance. In a recent BBC interview, he said forgiveness is entirely possible and admitted he wants to reconnect with his father and brother.
Yet within palace walls, some courtiers believe this invitation is less about family and more about controlling the narrative ahead of the next explosive chapter.
