Pope Leo XIV rests well as he recovers from lung surgery

Pope Leo XIV is recovering as expected after undergoing successful lung surgery, with the Vatican reporting that he had a restful night, ate breakfast and began walking around his hospital room.

In a statement Thursday, the Holy See Press Office said the 70-year-old pontiff also underwent routine blood tests and a chest X-ray, with results showing that his recovery was progressing normally.

The Pope underwent surgery Tuesday at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, where doctors removed the lower lobe of his right lung in a procedure that lasted about 90 minutes and was completed without complications.

Tissue samples examined during the operation confirmed a diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma, a type of lung cancer.

Despite the diagnosis, the Vatican said the Pope’s recovery was proceeding as expected, with no changes to the previously announced one-week hospital stay.

On Wednesday, the pontiff also concelebrated Mass in a room prepared for him on the hospital’s 10th floor.
