A police chief in Leyte is facing multiple charges after fatally shooting his compadre during a drinking session in Tunga, Leyte, on Sunday, Sept. 21, 2025.
The suspect was identified as Police Captain Alberto Parena, chief of the Almeria Municipal Police Station in Biliran and a resident of Barangay Abango, Barugo, Leyte. The victim, known by the alias Jomar, was a 56-year-old resident of Barangay Paglaum, Carigara, Leyte.
According to Police Major Edgar Remandaban, chief of the Tunga Municipal Police Station, the incident occurred during a heated argument between the two men while they were drinking in Barangay Balire.
Authorities reported that the victim allegedly drew a knife and attempted to stab Parena. In his account, the suspect said he fired a warning shot, but the victim continued the attack. Parena then shot the victim in the neck, resulting in his death.
Police immediately launched a hot pursuit operation, leading to the arrest of Parena. He is now in the custody of the Tunga Police Station, where he is expected to face multiple criminal charges related to the shooting.
The case has raised concerns due to Parena’s position as a police chief, highlighting questions about conduct, accountability, and the use of force by law enforcement officials even in off-duty situations.
Authorities have not yet released further details on the formal charges or whether the incident will trigger an internal investigation within the Philippine National Police.
