Phivolcs monitors heightened Kanlaon activity as volcano emissions reach 500 meters high

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported continued activity from Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island, as the volcano remains under close observation. Despite staying at Alert Level 2, Phivolcs recorded 11 volcanic earthquakes, with consistent ash emissions and sulfur dioxide output marking heightened volcanic activity.

Phivolcs observed an increase in ash emissions from Kanlaon’s main crater early on Nov. 10, reaching heights of up to 500 meters, according to data from the Kanlaon Volcano Observatory. The ash clouds were clearly visible, underscoring the volcano’s ongoing unrest.

Significant Sulfur Dioxide Emissions

In addition to seismic activity, sulfur dioxide emissions from Kanlaon were measured at nearly 4,000 tons per day, a notable indicator of the volcano’s sustained internal pressure. Phivolcs has consistently monitored the volcano’s inflation, suggesting magma movement beneath the surface. These observations align with the agency’s ongoing Alert Level 2 status, which cautions the public about potential sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions.

Public Advisory and Safety Precautions

Phivolcs has advised residents and visitors to avoid the four-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) around Kanlaon Volcano, due to the possibility of sudden ash falls and steam-driven eruptions. With activity levels indicating persistent unrest, the agency continues to keep Kanlaon under 24-hour surveillance.

The public, especially those in nearby communities, is urged to stay informed through official channels for any potential escalation in activity. Local disaster management agencies remain on alert, prepared to implement evacuation plans if the situation worsens.
