Phivolcs issues new alert levels for Kanlaon, Mayon, and Taal volcanoes, caution urged

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has updated the alert levels for three active volcanoes, underscoring the agency’s commitment to continuous monitoring and assessment. As of November 12, 2024, the agency has issued Alert Level 2 for Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island and Alert Level 1 for both Mayon Volcano in Albay and Taal Volcano in Batangas.

Kanlaon Volcano on Alert Level 2

Kanlaon Volcano, one of the most active volcanoes on Negros Island, has been on Alert Level 2 since June 3, 2024. This level signifies moderate unrest, suggesting that magma is likely moving within the volcano, increasing the risk of potential eruptions. Local authorities have been advised to keep residents informed and prepared, especially those within the immediate vicinity of the volcano.

Meanwhile, Mayon Volcano, known for its near-perfect cone shape, has been on Alert Level 1 since March 5, 2024. Similarly, Taal Volcano in Batangas has remained at Alert Level 1 since July 11, 2022. Alert Level 1 indicates low-level unrest, but PHIVOLCS reminds the public that volcanic activity can escalate and that preparedness remains critical.

PHIVOLCS continues to work with local government units to ensure public safety and is actively coordinating to mitigate risks. The agency reiterates the importance of staying updated through verified information channels, as these alert levels may change depending on volcanic activity.
