President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said he did not dream of becoming a politician as a child, recalling instead his early interest in science, mathematics, space and music.
Marcos shared his childhood aspirations during an interview with singer Gary Valenciano on the podcast “Unshaken with Gary V.” The episode featured personal stories about Marcos beyond his role as president.
Marcos said he had seen the difficulties and sacrifices associated with public life while growing up, leading him to initially consider a different career.
“The funny thing is, I’ll tell you what I knew I wasn’t going to be — was a politician,” Marcos said.
Instead, he developed an interest in mathematics and science and imagined himself becoming a scientist. He said he dreamed of working in a laboratory, wearing a white coat, conducting research, continuing his studies and possibly teaching.
Marcos also recalled having an interest in becoming an astronaut and said he wanted to fly into space.
Music also became an important part of his childhood and school years. While studying in England in the 1970s, he said his exposure to different music influenced him to explore the field further.
He learned to play the flute, later picked up the saxophone and performed with school and amateur orchestras. He also studied music theory.
Despite those early interests, Marcos eventually entered public service and became a politician. His recollections offered a look at career paths he once considered before pursuing a life in politics.
