The Makabayan bloc in the House of Representatives described the lifting of restrictions on accessing the Statements of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALN) of government officials as long overdue.
According to the group, this move is especially necessary now, given the ongoing discussions on corruption.
For ACT Teachers Rep. Antonio Tinio, the decision is a step toward transparency and accountability.
Kabataan Rep. Renee Louise Co also emphasized its importance for the youth and civil society organizations, who have long been at the forefront of pushing for transparency.
She added that this measure recognizes that transparency is not a privilege granted by officials, but a right of the people.
It may be recalled that yesterday, the Office of the Ombudsman officially lifted the access restrictions on SALNs, after the previous Ombudsman had barred public access to the document.
