A lawmaker has stressed that it is time to pass the Philippine Bicycle Act in response to the ongoing crisis.
Quezon City 5th District Representative PM Vargas called for the immediate passage of the measure, which aims to establish bike lanes and other bike-friendly infrastructure.
This comes amid the continued rise in fuel prices driven by tensions in the Middle East.
The proposal, under House Bill 7106, seeks to formalize and expand safe bike lane networks that were initially introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic.
It also offers tax incentives to employers who invest in bicycles and bike-related facilities for their employees, such as shower areas and lockers in offices.
According to the lawmaker, the goal is to promote a shift toward a safe, efficient, and non-polluting transportation system.
He added that it is time to make roads more inclusive for everyone.
Through this, the measure is also expected to help protect the environment and reduce dependence on imported oil.
