Lawmaker pushes bill allowing students to join graduation despite unpaid fees

A lawmaker is pushing for a measure that would allow students to participate in graduation ceremonies even if they have unpaid school fees.

Brian Yamsuan emphasized that students have the right to take part in graduation marches.

He recently filed House Bill No. 8618, which aims to stop schools from prohibiting students from joining graduation ceremonies due to outstanding financial obligations.

Through this measure, the lawmaker seeks to ensure that all students can celebrate their academic milestones regardless of their financial situation.

He stressed that education remains a source of hope for many struggling Filipino families, with parents often making sacrifices to ensure their children can graduate.

While the bill prohibits educational institutions from barring students who have completed academic requirements from graduation ceremonies due to unpaid fees, it also recognizes the schools’ right to collect tuition and other outstanding balances.
