House Good Government and Public Accountability Committee Chair Joel Chua stressed that the House of Representatives will not endorse any impeachment complaint unless it meets constitutional standards and is supported by solid evidence.
This comes after an impeachment complaint was filed against President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. by lawyer Andre de Jesus, which was endorsed by Pusong Pinoy Party-list Representative Jett Nisay.
Among the accusations against President Marcos are graft and corruption, culpable violation of the Constitution, and betrayal of public trust in connection with the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte last year.
According to Chua, impeachment requires clear, specific, and sufficient evidence of impeachable offenses.
He emphasized that it cannot be based on speculation, political disagreements, or mere allegations.
At present, Chua said there are no issues that would rise to the level of an impeachable offense as defined under the Constitution.
Meanwhile, he assured that there will be no shortcuts in the deliberations and no prejudgment of the case.
Chua added that the House of Representatives will carry out its mandate to evaluate the complaint filed by De Jesus and will strictly observe due process.
