The Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) stressed that seemingly minor statements by House members regarding notary issues may signal the kind of arguments that could be used to downplay the Makabayan bloc’s impeachment complaint against President Bongbong Marcos and prevent the committee from discussing alleged misuse of public funds.
Because of this, BAYAN called on Filipinos and anti-corruption advocates to closely monitor the sessions of the House committee.
The group said lawmakers should be reminded that their duty is to uphold truth and accountability, not to shield the President from responsibility over allegations that he acted as a “mastermind” who also benefited from widespread corruption.
BAYAN added that there is no excuse for allies of President Marcos to block the pursuit of truth and the public’s demand to hold corrupt officials accountable.
According to the group, lawmakers should allow the impeachment proceedings to move forward by questioning the President about the corruption allegations raised against him.
