The Department of Education (DepEd) has extended its condolences to the family of a Grade 4 pupil who died following a school deworming activity at Hugo Perez Elementary School-Annex in Trece Martires City, Cavite.
In a statement released Monday, DepEd said it is coordinating with health authorities to determine the full details and cause of the incident.
The agency also assured the public that it will provide the necessary interventions and other forms of assistance to the bereaved family.
The incident occurred on July 2 during a routine deworming activity conducted by the school in partnership with the Trece Martires City Health Office.
Following the activity, several pupils reportedly experienced vomiting and other symptoms and were immediately taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
Based on initial medical findings, the Grade 4 pupil’s death was linked to an infection that resulted in septic shock.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine whether the fatality was related to the deworming activity.
DepEd said it is working closely with health authorities as the investigation proceeds to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The department also urged the public to rely only on verified information from health experts and avoid spreading unconfirmed reports while the investigation remains ongoing.
No official findings have been released establishing a direct connection between the deworming activity and the pupil’s death.
The agency said updates will depend on the results of the continuing investigation by the appropriate health authorities.
