Grade 11 student in Lanao del Sur shoots teacher dead over failing grade

A teacher in Balabagan, Lanao del Sur, was shot and killed allegedly by his Grade 11 student after the latter received a failing grade, police said.

Authorities identified the victim as Danilo Barba, 34, a teacher at Balabagan Trade School. The suspect, a 20-year-old male student, fled the scene but later surrendered through his brother, who is a police officer.

Investigators said Barba was about to enter the school when the suspect allegedly shot him with a .45 caliber pistol. The suspect immediately ran away after the incident.

Multiple witnesses reportedly identified the shooter as a student of the victim, prompting authorities to quickly file a murder case against him.

The Balabagan Police noted that the motive was linked to the failing grade the student allegedly received from the teacher.

Following the killing, several teachers expressed fear for their safety. The Lanao del Sur Provincial Police Office has assured them of increased security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Police have not disclosed further details on how the suspect obtained the firearm. The investigation is ongoing.
