The family of Rene Clert “Bobet” Baterbonia has called for an end to the sale of shirts and jerseys bearing his image without their permission.
Rovelyn Baterbonia, the athlete’s mother, appealed to the public and vendors to stop selling merchandise that uses her son’s photograph unless it has been authorized by the family.
According to Rovelyn, the only products approved for sale are those personally signed by her as Bobet’s mother. She issued the statement after learning that various apparel items featuring her son’s image were being sold in different locations, particularly in Talacogon, Agusan del Sur.
She said some sellers have claimed that proceeds from the sales would be given to the family. However, Rovelyn emphasized that merchandise not authorized by the family should not be sold.
The family also urged the public to respect the memory of the deceased and avoid purchasing unauthorized apparel. They warned that buying or selling such items could result in legal consequences.
Meanwhile, a separate incident during Baterbonia’s wake drew significant public attention after videos circulated online showing two white doves inside the chapel where his remains were laid in state.
Based on accounts from witnesses and footage shared on social media, the birds remained inside the chapel for an extended period. One of the doves was seen eating and drinking from a glass near the altar before flying and perching on top of a picture frame displaying Baterbonia’s image.
The unusual scene became widely discussed online and among mourners attending the wake.
Many family members, supporters and followers interpreted the appearance of the doves as a symbol of peace and a final farewell to the late athlete. However, these interpretations remain personal beliefs shared by those who witnessed the event.
