Ex-President Rodrigo Duterte’s fate at ICC: VP Sara says he is ‘confident’ as supporters demand his release in The Hague

Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte remains confident that the International Criminal Court (ICC) has no case against him, according to his daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte. Speaking to reporters on Sunday, she said her father strongly believes the charges lack merit and continues to ask about legal strategies.

The former president, who faces charges of crimes against humanity related to his war on drugs, is currently detained in The Hague. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 23, where he will have the opportunity to contest the allegations.

Supporters Call for Duterte’s Release

Thousands of Duterte supporters gathered in The Hague’s Het Malieveld square, urging both the Philippine government and the ICC to send him home. Many traveled from across Europe, including Germany, Belgium, and the United Kingdom, to show their support.

One supporter from Belgium said traveling to The Hague was worth it, adding that they believe Duterte does not deserve to be detained. Another attendee from Germany said their presence was voluntary and insisted the former president should not be imprisoned in the Netherlands.

Duterte’s legal team has claimed that his arrest was unlawful. His lawyer, Salvador Medialdea, argued in court that Duterte was taken from Manila and transported to The Hague without due process, calling it an act of “extrajudicial rendition.”

Duterte’s Health and Birthday Plans

Vice President Duterte assured supporters that her father’s health has improved since his initial court appearance, where he seemed fatigued. She said medical staff at the detention center are taking good care of him.

She also revealed that her father requested personal clothing and a supply of diet cola. Additionally, he has complained about Dutch food but is now receiving properly cooked rice, prepared according to Filipino taste.

Duterte will turn 80 on March 28 while in detention. His youngest daughter, Veronica Duterte, is set to visit him in The Hague before his birthday. However, his two sons currently do not have visas, preventing them from joining the trip.

Political Implications and Future Plans

During her speech, Vice President Duterte addressed speculations about a possible 2028 presidential bid. She dismissed the idea, saying she is more focused on setting up a legal system that allows her to balance her responsibilities in The Hague with her work in the Philippines.

Despite the controversy surrounding Duterte’s detention, his supporters remain hopeful. One rally attendee extended birthday greetings to the former president, expressing confidence that he will overcome his legal battle.

Meanwhile, ICC prosecutors maintain that Duterte’s war on drugs involved a systematic attack against civilians, with potentially tens of thousands of extrajudicial killings. The case remains highly contentious, with international human rights groups supporting the ICC’s investigation.
