Duterte camp urges Marcos to allow former President’s return amid ICC detention

The camp of former President Rodrigo Duterte has appealed to the administration of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to allow Duterte’s return to the Philippines under an interim release arrangement.

According to Duterte’s lawyer, Atty. Nicholas Kaufman, the request was made in light of the former president’s age and deteriorating medical condition while being held in a detention facility under the International Criminal Court (ICC). Kaufman said Duterte’s health issues have increasingly affected his ability to function.

The legal team asked that Duterte be permitted to come back to the country if the interim release is granted, emphasizing that his current situation has taken a toll.

The ICC is handling crimes against humanity charges against Duterte, connected to his controversial war on drugs. The tribunal had scheduled a confirmation of charges hearing on September 23, but it was postponed, leaving Duterte’s legal process in limbo.

Supporters of the former president argue that his medical condition should be considered while legal proceedings continue. The camp has not provided details on what specific arrangements are being proposed for Duterte’s release, but stressed that his health must be prioritized.

The Marcos administration has not issued an official response to the request. The matter remains politically sensitive, with Duterte still a prominent figure in Philippine politics despite the ICC proceedings.

For now, Duterte remains under ICC custody as his lawyers continue to push for his temporary release and eventual return to the Philippines.
