Cousins dead after fatal New Year’s day stabbing

A heated argument during a New Year’s celebration in Lower Awihao, Toledo City, Cebu, ended in tragedy as two cousins fatally stabbed each other in a shocking family dispute.

Police identified the victims as Catalino Ortega Canillo, 50, and Alberto Canillo Sedon, 45, both residents of the area.

According to the Toledo City Police investigation, the incident began with a drinking session among family members. An argument broke out between Catalino and his younger sister, Susan. Alberto sided with Susan, leading to a heated exchange with Catalino, which rekindled a long-standing feud.

Tensions escalated when Catalino allegedly stabbed Alberto. However, Alberto managed to seize the knife and retaliated, fatally stabbing Catalino. The chaos continued as Catalino’s older brother, Andres, 59, intervened. Andres reportedly wrestled the knife from Alberto and stabbed him to death.

When authorities arrived, barangay tanods had already restrained Andres, who was then brought to the police station for proper disposition.
